Virtual Currencies are the New Black

So yesterday I wrote a simple introduction to Bitcoins and Litecoins. Last night while following the BCS National Championship (which it turns out I really only needed to tune in the last few minutes of the game) I came across a ton of other virtual currencies. There are so many programmers/copycats who are trying to cash in on the bitcoin craze.

Here are just a few (36) virtual currencies that see higher trading and mining volume. But I did find a site that lists 175 different virtual currencies.

  1. Bitcoin – (1 BTC = $865 USD)
  2. Litecoin – (1 LTC = $26 USD)
  3. Feathercoin – (1 FTC = $0.45 USD)
  4. Terracoin – (1 TRC = 0.00065 BTC)
  5. Freicoin – (1 FRC = 0.00009 BTC)
  6. BitBar – (1 BTB = 0.00007 BTC)
  7. Mincoin – (1 MNC = 0.00068 BTC)
  8. BBQCoin – (1 BQC = 0.00005 BTC)
  9. DGCoin – (1 DGC = 0.00045 BTC)
  10. WorldCoin – (1 WDC = 0.0005 BTC)
  11. LuckyCoin – (1 LKY = 0.00002 BTC)
  12. Novacoin – (1 NVC = $15.60 USD)
  13. StableCoin – (1 SBC = 0.00009 BTC)
  14. FrankoCoin – (1 FRK = 0.002 BTC)
  15. Anoncoin – (1 ANC = 0.006 BTC)
  16. Zetacoin – (1 ZET = 0.00003 BTC)
  17. Krugercoin – (1 KGC = 0.00001 BTC)
  18. EZcoin – (1 EZC = 0.0007 LTC)
  19. Spots – (1 SPT = 0.00002 BTC)
  20. MegaCoin – (1 MEC = 0.00095 BTC)
  21. Infinitecoin – (1 IFC = 0.000003 LTC)
  22. CasinoCoin – (1 CSC = 0.00002 BTC)
  23. Emerald – (1 EMD = 0.00005 BTC)
  24. Fastcoin – (1 FST = 0.00002 BTC)
  25. YACoin – (1 YAC = 0.000045 BTC)
  26. Alphacoin – (1 ALF = 0.000007 BTC)
  27. Argentum – (1 ARG = 0.0003 BTC)
  28. Unobtanium – (UNO not traded yet)
  29. Quark – (1 QRK = 0.00008 BTC)
  30. BetaCoin – (1 BET = 0.00005 BTC)
  31. SecureCoin – (1 SRC = 0.002 BTC)
  32. Lottocoin – (1 LOT = 0.0000002 BTC)
  33. FireFlyCoin – (1 FFC = 0.000002 BTC)
  34. MemeCoin – (1 MEM = 0.0003 LTC)
  35. DogeCoin – (1 DOGE = 0.0000003 BTC)
  36. CatCoin – (1 CAT = 1,480 DOGE)

I’ve been having a bit of fun with DogeCoin, but it is crazy that so many people are creating new virtual currencies just about every day in an attempt to reproduce the crazy profits that happened to early adopters of Bitcoin.

What are your thoughts? Do you think ANY currency besides Bitcoin will catch on? The three that I’ve heard most talked about, besides Bitcoin, are Litecoin, Feathercoin, and DogeCoin.
